SA AIA Digital Visibility Guide 2026
You do not need to become a marketer. You need to make it easy for the right people to find you, trust you and contact you.
The whole guide in one sentence
You do not need to be everywhere. You need to be findable in the right places, useful when people find you, and easy to contact or book.
Start here
What should I actually use?
Choose the closest match. This is a practical starting stack — not a rule that says you need every platform.
Professional Guide
The customer journey
A Reel is rarely the booking.
A customer may notice you in one place, check you in three others, and only then start a conversation.
A real-world example
Someone sees your Drakensberg hiking Reel.
They do not book from the Reel. They Google:
- They find you on Google.
- They read reviews.
- They open your website.
- They check the guide, difficulty, price, safety and meeting point.
- They tap WhatsApp.
- Then they book.
Social gets attention.
Google captures intent.
Someone watching hiking Reels may like hiking. Someone searching “guided hikes Drakensberg” is actively looking.
Give each platform a job
Stop asking every channel to do everything.
Keep category, area, hours, photos, services, phone and reviews current.
Next → call / websiteYour owned home base: services, FAQs, safety, pricing or enquiry process, trust and booking.
Next → contact / bookUse real photos, short video, useful answers and visible competence.
Next → profile / websiteUseful for local audiences, parents, groups, events, updates and conversation.
Next → website / WhatsAppShort, useful, watchable explanations can reach people who do not know you yet.
Next → profile / searchGreat for demonstrations, route explainers, training and evergreen questions.
Next → websiteEspecially useful for training, ABL, corporate work, partnerships and professional authority.
Next → service pageTreat it as a conversion and service channel, not a place to spam everyone you know.
Next → conversationWhat should I post?
Useful beats “Book now!”
Think in seven simple jobs: answer, show, teach, reassure, prove, inspire, invite. Then adapt the format to the platform.
30 seconds: show the terrain, explain the fitness level, mention who should reconsider, then point to the full route details.
“We do not simply cancel the programme. Here is how we change activities, manage lightning risk and keep the learning outcomes intact.”
Weather plans are part of programme design — not an afterthought.
For school and corporate programmes, a useful contingency plan protects safety, learning outcomes and client confidence.
A 5–8 minute explainer covering kit, safety briefing, difficulty, swimming confidence and the day from arrival to finish.

One idea, many formats
Research once. Answer properly. Adapt intelligently.
This is exactly where the SA AIA Insights resource helps: it shows what people are asking. This guide helps you decide where your answer should live.
Making money
Do social platforms actually pay South Africans?
Sometimes. But there are two very different ways your content can make money.
The platform pays you.
Examples include eligible advertising revenue, creator programmes, memberships, gifts or other platform monetisation tools. Availability and eligibility differ by platform and country.
Your content brings you customers.
Someone sees something useful, checks you out, visits your website, sends a WhatsApp and books. For most SA AIA members, this is the more important outcome.
Platform money in South Africa
So which platforms can pay creators?
Status below was last verified 15 September 2026. A “yes” never means a guaranteed payment per view — eligibility, programme rules and account status still apply.
YouTube
Partner Programme is available in South Africa, subject to current eligibility. Revenue can include ads, Shorts revenue and eligible fan-funding features. There is no fixed “amount per view”.
TikTok
Do not confuse the standard Creator Rewards programme with Effect Creator Rewards, LIVE tools, gifts, subscriptions, brand deals or TikTok One.
Facebook Content Monetization lists South Africa, but access remains subject to invite/eligibility, policy and performance requirements.
There is no simple South African “payment for every Reel view” promise. Product availability varies by account, country and eligibility.
X
Original Content Rewards began rolling out in September 2026. South Africa is listed, but eligibility and qualified-impression rules apply.
LinkedIn / WhatsApp / Maps
NO GENERAL PAY-PER-VIEW MODELThe value is authority, enquiries, conversion, discovery, service and repeat business.
Views can be useful, but they are not the business outcome. Measure whether the platform is doing its job: creating attention, building trust, generating enquiries, or helping people book.
Using influencers
A creator is another way to reach the right people.
You might use a creator to show an experience, reach a specific audience, create useful photos or video, or drive enquiries. Start with what you want them to do — not how many followers they have.
Awareness, content, enquiries, bookings — or something else?
A smaller relevant audience can be more useful than a huge generic one.
Paid fee, hosted experience, referral, content creation — or a mix.
Safety, PPE, access, children, wildlife, drones and other operating boundaries still apply.
Be clear about what they are actually creating and where it may be used.
Website, WhatsApp, enquiry form, booking page or campaign code.
If you invite, host or pay a creator, their participation should still reflect the standards and behaviour you expect from your own guides, staff and clients.
Open-access places are different. If somebody independently posts risky behaviour at a public destination, you may have little control over that creator. That is different from a creator you invite, host, pay or choose to repost.
If you only do five things
Build the basics before adding more channels.
Have a home.
A useful website or professional destination. Small and good beats large and poor.
Be findable.
Google Search and Google Business Profile where applicable.
Choose channels.
Pick the social places that match your customers — not every app.
Make contact easy.
WhatsApp, phone, enquiry or booking should never be hard to find.
Answer real questions.
Use the Insights approach: useful content starts with what customers actually need to know.
You do not need
- every platform
- daily posts
- viral videos
- expensive cameras
- thousands of followers
- a marketing department
You do need
- useful information
- consistency
- credibility
- real imagery
- easy contact
- a clear destination
Need the detail?
Open the bits you need. Ignore the rest.
This is the reference layer: useful when you are fixing something specific, not required reading before you can start.
South Africa online — the 2026 numbers
Platform audience signals
These are not all the same measurement and should not be ranked as if they were.
- TikTok: 29.1m potential ad audience, age 18+
- Facebook: 27.9m potential ad audience
- YouTube: 26.9m potential ad audience
- LinkedIn: 17.0m registered members
- Instagram: 8.60m potential ad audience
- Snapchat: 5.40m potential ad audience
- X: 2.96m potential ad audience
- Reddit: 2.75m potential ad audience
Mobile matters: mobile represented about 53.3% of South African web usage in August 2026, versus 46.1% desktop and 0.6% tablet.
Your website — what actually needs to be there?
Social media is rented space. The platform controls algorithms, reach, rules and features. Your website is owned space.
- what you offer
- where you operate
- who it is for
- difficulty / prerequisites
- price or enquiry process
- what is included and what clients bring
- safety information
- qualifications where relevant
- real photographs and reviews
- FAQs
- WhatsApp, phone and enquiry / booking
All roads should lead somewhere useful.
Google Search — SEO without the jargon
Google broadly works through crawl → index → serve/rank. Organic search is not the same as Google Ads, and businesses cannot pay Google for a higher organic ranking.
- Answer real customer questions.
- Use language customers actually use.
- Have a page for important services.
- Make location clear.
- Use descriptive headings.
- Publish useful original content.
- Make the site work well on mobile.
- Keep contact details obvious.
- Keep important information in web text, not only PDFs or graphics.
Google Maps / Business Profile — local visibility
Examples: “4x4 training Pretoria”, “school camps Gauteng”, “rafting Parys”, “hiking guides Drakensberg”. Google describes local ranking through relevance, distance and prominence.
- Claim and verify the profile.
- Choose an accurate category.
- Add services and current photos.
- Keep hours, phone and website correct.
- Respond to reviews.
- Keep business information consistent.
Businesses cannot pay Google for better organic local ranking.
How algorithms work — without chasing them
There is no single algorithm. Platforms use ranking and recommendation systems to predict what may be useful or interesting to each person.
TikTok
Signals can include watch time, completion, skips, likes, comments, shares, follows, topic, search relevance, sounds and hashtags. Hashtags provide context; they are not magic.
YouTube
Think appeal → engagement → satisfaction: did they choose it, keep watching, and find it worthwhile?
Professional relevance, network, topic, content quality, activity, context and timeliness matter.
Facebook / Instagram
Meta uses predicted relevance, relationships, interactions, originality, engagement and content-quality signals. Meta's 2026 guidance puts stronger emphasis on rewarding original content and reducing unoriginal / spammy distribution.
Search aims to surface useful and relevant results. Local results use relevance, distance and prominence.
Do not create content for an algorithm. Create content for the person the algorithm is trying to help.
How often should I post?
The best schedule is one you can sustain while still producing useful content.
Realistic SA AIA starter
- Primary social platform: 1–3 useful posts per week.
- Secondary platform: 1–2 adapted pieces per week.
- Website: publish a genuinely useful answer when there is something worth saying.
- Google Business Profile: keep information accurate and add useful imagery / updates when relevant.
- WhatsApp: communicate when it is worthwhile — do not spam people.
WhatsApp Business — use it to convert, not broadcast endlessly
Useful current business features include a business profile, website and telephone details, messaging tools, catalogues / services and organised conversations.
Guide
Guided Mountain Day
Short description · approximate price or enquiry · website link.
Training provider
Swiftwater Course
Dates · prerequisites · course-page link.
Camp
Grade 7 Camp
Duration · group information · enquiry.
Google / social gets attention → website builds understanding → WhatsApp makes the conversation easy.
Organic vs paid vs creator monetisation
Organic
You publish; the platform decides who may see it.
Paid
You pay the platform to distribute advertising.
Creator monetisation
The platform pays an eligible creator.
These are different. Boosting a poor post cannot repair an unclear service, weak website, missing contact details, bad targeting or poor customer follow-up. Every campaign should have an intended action: enquire, call, WhatsApp, register, request a quote, book or visit a page.
What should I measure?
Attention: views, reach.
Interest: watch time, saves, shares, comments, completion.
Intent: profile visits, Google searches, website visits, map directions, call clicks, WhatsApp clicks.
Lead: enquiry, quote request, course registration.
Business: booking, enrolment, sale, repeat customer.
Advocacy: review, referral, recommendation, user content.
The metric must match the job the platform is doing. A Maps listing does not need Instagram likes. A training provider needs qualified enquiries more than followers.
POPIA & responsible marketing
Practical principles: collect contact information for a clear purpose; do not automatically add every customer to a marketing list; obtain appropriate consent; respect opt-outs; protect personal information; get appropriate permission for testimonials or identifiable images; take particular care with children and school/camp imagery; and remember that WhatsApp marketing still falls within privacy and direct-marketing considerations.

Member challenge
Make yourself easier to find this month.
You do not need to become an influencer. Pick one weak point in your customer journey and improve it — then make the next step obvious.
